Free NBN Speed Boosts Rolling Out in September
Starting mid-September 2025, NBN Co is giving millions of Australian homes and businesses a free speed boost. If you’re on a fast plan already — or can upgrade — you could soon be enjoying speeds up to five times faster, without paying a cent more.
The upgrade applies to customers on FTTP (fibre to the premises) or HFC (hybrid coaxial) connections. If you’re on NBN 100, 250 or 1000, your plan will automatically jump in speed. For example, the popular NBN 100 plan will increase from 100 Mbps to 500 Mbps downloads, while the upload speed will more than double from 20 Mbps to 50 Mbps. NBN 250 will climb to 750 Mbps, and NBN 1000 will see uploads go from 50 Mbps to 100 Mbps.
A brand-new “Hyperfast 2000” tier will also launch, offering up to 2,000 Mbps downloads. FTTP customers will get up to 200 Mbps upload, while HFC customers can expect 100 Mbps uploads. While most households won’t need speeds that high right now, it’s a sign of where home internet is heading — especially with 8K streaming, large cloud backups, and AI tools becoming more common.
If you’re not already on FTTP or HFC, you might still be in luck. Many addresses with older connections like FTTN and FTTC are now eligible for a free fibre upgrade to FTTP. You’ll need to move to a plan of 100 Mbps or higher to trigger the upgrade, but the long-term benefits in speed and reliability make it worthwhile.
To make the most of the faster speeds, you may need to check your equipment. Older modems and routers might not handle 500 Mbps or more, especially over Wi-Fi. Ideally, you’ll want a router with Wi-Fi 6 or 6E and a gigabit-capable connection to your NBN device. Without the right hardware, you might not notice the full benefit of the upgrade.
This is part of NBN Co’s “Accelerate Great” program, which is designed to prepare Australian households for rising data demands. As more devices connect and more of our work, entertainment and communication happens online, having extra speed means less buffering, faster downloads, and smoother video calls — even when multiple people are using the internet at the same time.
If you’re already on an eligible plan, there’s nothing you need to do — your speed will increase automatically from September 14–15. If you’re not sure what plan you’re on or whether you can upgrade, now’s a great time to check. In many cases, you can switch to a faster, cheaper plan with no contract and start benefiting right away.
